HISTORY

As part of the 1999 Rugby World Cup build up, Colchester was chosen as one of the venues for the national tour of the Rugby World Cup Message Relay Ball.  A day of celebrations ended with a game between Colchester and a Tendring Barbarians side made up of players form Brightlingsea, Clacton, Harwich & Dovercourt, Mersea Island and Mistley.  The Barbarians were supplemented with players from Sudbury, Hadleigh and North Walsham, so it was not surprising that after a very entertaining game the Barbarians won 33-0.

The fixture is now established as an annual event, and acts as a showcase for the best rugby talent in North East Essex.  The first fixture was sponsored by Brennan Ltd who put up a Challenge Trophy, the Brennan Bowl, to be awarded to the captain of the winning side.

The game is held at Colchester's Mill Road ground midweek under floodlights, and proceeds from programme sales, raffle and a collection will be donated to the Wooden Spoon Society.  From 2005 more regular fixtures have been planned; against Clacton on Boxing  Day, against Mersea Island on May Day Bank Holiday Sunday, and against Suffolk as part of their preparations for the Sub County Championship.
