ROMAN RUINS MATCH REPORTS

COLCHESTER ROMAN RUINS 15 HADLEIGH VETS 12
Wednesday 10 November

Hadleigh had only 12 players to begin with as a car had been delayed. Lee Tanner and Dave Rhymes kindly agreed to play for the opposition and enable the match to start.

Hadleigh took the lead when their no. 8 stormed through to score under the posts, converted to make it 0-7.  Iain Jack, on the left wing, was given a bit of space to score out wide making it 5-7.  Forward pressure was eventually rewarded with a try for Norman Gould when he was driven over the line, 10-7.  More good team play enabled the backs to make an overlap on the right, with full back Julian Clark coming into the line and right wing Jim Stonard scored  out wide.  Half-time 15-7.

Hadleigh, playing with the wind, exerted a lot of pressure throughout the first 20 mins of the 2nd half, and eventually they pulled a try back making the score 15-12.  Colchester took it on in the forwards and regularly made good ground. One passage of play saw the ball kept alive by Colchester for what seemed like an eternity, with the play moving both ways across the pitch, more like a youth game than vets.

Colchester probably finished the stronger and just about deserved the victory, the game was played in a true vets spirit.
