Local man Ben Acton played for England Universities against Combined Services U21s at Twickenham on Saturday, before the Army vs Navy game. It was his second appearance in an England shirt having played for England Students U19s against Scotland in 2002, but a serious head injury last year so nearly could have ended his rugby career.
He suffered the injury in November and was not allowed to play until February, but in just his second game he was selected for his University, St Mary's College in London, and he fought his way back into international contention, being rewarded with a place on the bench at Twickenham. Ben came on as a half time replacement and was reported by his coach to have had an outstanding game, scoring a try in England Universities' 83-5 defeat of Combined Services U21s.
21 year-old back row player Ben is from Wrabness and went to St Joseph's College in Ipswich, but played for Colchester Rugby Club as a youth. Colchester's Director of Rugby Andrew Sarek said: "We are very proud of what Ben has achieved on the rugby field, and relieved that he has made a total recovery from his injury."
